Paul Heinrich Bethge

1993-now

researcher // artist

TL;DR: A media researcher and creative coder, also known as Paul Henri from Karlsruhe, Germany, currently based in Hong Kong. He explores intermedial translation and multimodal interactions between humans and machines.

Born in a village close to Karlsruhe, Germany, Paul grew up with lakes on the door step and a Game Boy tied to his hands. This early, yet constrained, access to technology sparked his interest in the world of electronics. While studying he soon realized his passion for programming and synthesizers and began developing prototypes for interactive sound devices.

As the COVID19 apprublty put the world on hold, a job opportunity as a software developer at the ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe offered Paul a unique opportunity to explore the world of media art. As part of the team of intelligent.museum he supported resident artists in artwork production, developed open source software for artists and gave his own ideas a try.
During this time he also got introduced to live coding and joined the newly formed _\|/_ Toplap Karlsruhe. Since then he has been performing and teaching live coding for visual arts as Paul Henri.
Since 2024, Paul has been a research assistant at the Visualization Research Centre at Hong Kong Baptist University, led by Jeffrey Shaw.
